Onam has been celebrated since time immemorial by all sects of the society irrespective of caste and creed. The legend of Onam is based on a myth where a very just king named Mahabali(The grandson of Prahlada) ruled Kerala. His rule was so just and popular that there existed only truth, equality and no malice at all. Prosperity was the main symbol in his country. The god of Devas, Indra got jealous and was afraid he might lose his throne to Mahabali on account of the latter's fame as a great king, went to other gods. They made a plot to control Mahabali. Mahavishnu as a young brahmin boy, the Vamana avatar approached him and asked a favour. Mahabali never refused any requests. Despite the warning by his guru, Sukra he allowed the boy to ask his favour. The boy asked only three feet of land. The king sanctioned it. Suddenly the boy grew so big that he covered with two feet, the heaven, the earth and paatal. He then asked where to measure his third foot. Bali bowed his head. Vamana asked him if he had any wish before being sent to the underwolrd. Mahabali requested to give an annual opportunity to visit his people, and was granted. So Onam is celebrated during his supposed visit to his beloved country. less
