Makar Sankranti also is known as Maghi or Makara Sankranti is celebrated by Hindus every year in January and is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. This festival also symbolises the completion of the Winter Season and the beginning of a new harvest season. Makar Sankranti is considered as essential for spiritual practices where people take a holy dip in the sacred rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri. The festival is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm by preparing sticky, bound sweets, socializing with friends and relatives, taking care of cattle, celebrating around bonfires and flying kites. This harvest festival has different names in different parts of India such as Lohri, Thai Pongal, Magh Bihu, Poush Sangkranti, Uttarayan and is celebrated with different customs and rituals.
